Durations: Philosophy and Magic w/ Mitch Horowitz, Phil Ford, and Maeg Keane [UPSTAIRS]

Durations 2025 presents "In Conversation," a discussion series with some of today’s most forward-thinking philosophers.

Our first panel brings together Mitch Horowitz [author, historian], Phil Ford [Weird Studies], and Maeg Keane [Third Sister Astrology], hosted by Meredith Graves.

About the Panel:

To the newly-curious, both magic and philosophy may seem like daunting fields: both disciplines originate in the earliest eras of human history, require a lifetime of studying endlessly complex material, and leave you with more questions about the nature of existence. They may also initially seem mutually exclusive, with philosophy a formalized area of academic study rooted in logic and rationality, and occultism a more ephemeral mesh of ideas, beliefs and practices.

However, to the trained eye, these two areas of study exist on the same plane — from the arguments of ancient thinkers as to the nature of spirits in the material world, to the entire discipline of metaphysics, the roles divination and dreaming have played in the development of certain schools of thought. Now, in modern times, many thinkers are seeking to further elucidate this historically prevalent yet arcane relationship and shine a light on the role each has played in the development of the other.

Please join us for a mediated conversation between three highly-acclaimed esoteric thinkers as we shine light on potential sites of exploration at the interstice of thought and magic.

Durations Festival 2025

Durations 2025 presents "In Conversation," a discussion series with some of today’s most forward-thinking philosophers.

Renowned philosophical and theoretical podcast, Acid Horizon, joins Durations for its second year, this time with The New Centre for Research and Practice. We invite Jason Mohoghegh and Reza Negarestani to the discussion.

About The Session:

Five rare sightings from digital culture; five philosophies of strangeness hovering over our techno-existential future. This talk will explore the outer boundaries of our virtual age by summoning examples of those most obscure moods and atmospheres found in the shadows of the internet [i.e. AI hallucinations, machine oneirics, deceptive avatars, cyber-undergrounds]. Though placed together in a collector's room, each “incident” holds its own riddles that compel us to reconsider what is happening now to perception, fear, desire, cruelty, and transformation. What seem like glitches may, in fact, mark the return and intensification of a much older code of consciousness: fissures in mind and experience that suspend us between imagination and disturbance as two sides of the same coin.

Divining Sounds is a community musical event drawing together oracular imagination and music composed and performed by chance. This gathering is a collaboration between Open Music and Acid Horizon—together we will utilize Vintagia: I Ching Oracle for Psychogeography and Creative Discovery to draw upon the stochastic forces of the cosmos, creating improvisational compositions performed live with the @openmusicpa ensemble.

The experimental workshop and ensuing performance will be preceded by an initiatory talk introducing the multiple creative realms unlocked through Vintagia. Members of the audience will be invited to join us in live experimentation and collective improvisation.

Tarot and I Ching readings will be offered onsite, and there will be a chance to obtain one of five limited-edition copies of Acéphalous: The Erotic Tarot of Georges Bataille—along with one of the few physical copies of Vintagia made available for purchase. A guest raffle will feature both decks and limited-edition Vintagia prints.

“… there is no state of mind, however simple, which does not change every moment, since there is no consciousness without memory, and no continuation of a state without the addition, to the present feeling, of the memory of past moments. It is this which constitutes duration.” – Henri Bergson, An Introduction to Metaphysics.

Acid Horizon Presents "Plastic Ghosts and Trash Immortals: Our Afterlife as Waste" with Nicolas de Warren

Our quest for immortality is complete: we will live forever through our trash. Our penchant for plastic disposables in particular presents us with a future in which forms of life will remain haunted by human waste. What does the legacy of 'homo detritus' mean for humanity and the world?

The Acid Horizon philosophy and theory podcast presents Penn State professor of philosophy Nicolas de Warren for an evening of public philosophy. Libations and live lofi/ambient beats kick off an evening of thoughtful reflection and discussion. $10 entry includes one drink.
